Introduction

Basic area infoSamaria Gorge is a National Park at the roots of the White Mountains of Crete. It is the biggest gorge in Europe. It starts at the plateau of Omalos and it ends at the seaside village of Agia Roumeli. Its’ length is 16km and it is the second most visited attraction in Crete. For the public it is open from May till October and every year more than 300000 people walk through it.
The gorge and the area surrounding it contains unique species of flora and fauna and in the gorge you will find natural springs with drinking crystal clear cold water. Also, there exists the famous Cretan Wild Goat (Capra aegagrus creticus) or Kri Kri.

The Program

Tour scheduleFrom 05:30 till 06:00 in the morning the bus will stop to all the pick up points to take all the passengers that will join the trip to Samaria Gorge. At 06:00 in the morning all the passengers are on board, the bus is at the main station at Halydon Street in Chania city center and everything is ready for the journey to start!
The first stop will be at Omalos Plateau. It takes for the bus approximately about one and a half hour to get there. During the way to Omalos the tour guide in the bus will give you a sightseeing tour and he will provide you with useful information about the flora and the fauna that exists in the park, about the history and the formation of the gorge and also he will instruct you about the rules and the safety regulations that must be followed during your visit.
At 07:30 the bus arrives at Omalos and there is a short stop to a taverna before you enter the gorge. At the taverna you can buy something to eat or you can have a coffee.
At 08:00 you are at Xyloskalo (The Samaria Gorge Entrance). The tour guide sets the meeting point and the time in Agia Roumeli village and now you enter the gorge and you start walking the path. All you need now with you is a small bottle of water and perhaps some snack. Inside Samaria there are many natural springs and you can refill your bottle with pure crystal clear water from the White Mountains.
To walk the gorge from side to side it will take you from 5 to 7 hours. It depends on the pace that you want to follow. When everybody exits the gorge the guide meets the group to a taverna and at 17:30 the whole group embarks the ferry boat to Sougia (or Sfakia). At 18:30 the boat arrives. There is the bus waiting for you to return you to your hotel.
